What's in a Name?

Mount Assiniboine (3,618m or 11,970 feet)

Located on the Great Divide (on the border between BC and Alberta) in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, BC on the border between BC and Alberta, this mountain is the highest peak in the southern continental ranges of the Canadian Rockies. It looks a little like the Matterhorn, so it isn't surprising that it's sometimes called "The Matterhorn of the Rockies."

The mountain was named by George Dawson who, it is said, thought the mountain reminded him of the plumes of smoke rising from the Assiniboine Indians' teepees. Now known as the Nakoda First Nation, the indigenous people of the area have also been known as the Stoney Indian tribe. The name Stoney derived from the custom of cooking food by placing hot stones in containers of water.
